SMTP (SIMPLE MAIL TRANSFER PROTOCOL)
Simple Mall Transfer Protocol (SMPT) is the most common protocol used for transferring e-mails between two or more servers. It generally sends the messages from a mail client to a mail server. Apart from transferring e-mails, SMTP also provides notifications regarding the incoming mail. However it cannot transmit pictures, sounds, or movies. It is capable of sending text only. It has limited ability to queue the messages at the receiver's end. Hence, we need some other protocols for e-mail retrieval.
POP3 (POST OFFICE PROTOCOL VERSION 3)
POP3 (Post Office Protocol Version 3) is another commonly used e-mail protocol. It helps to retrieve e-mails from a remote web server using a local client. All POP3 mail servers have a unique address provided by the e-mail service provider. To effectively use POP3 protocol with the e-mail client program (like MS outlook) the address of the mail server must be configured correctly, you will also need to input your username and password to successfully receive e-mails from a remote web server.
