form axn
for a real number a, where a ¹ 0 and a whole number n.

3.2.1 DEGREE OF A POLYNOMIAL
Recall that if p(x) is a polynomial in x, the highest power of x in p(x) is called the degree
of the polynomial p(x). For example, 3x + 5 is a polynomial in the variable x. It is of degree 1 and
is called a linear polynomial. 5x, 2 5 y∗ ,

P, m + 1 etc. are some more linear polynomials.
A polynomial of degree 2 is called a quadratic polynomial.
For example, x

a quadratic polynomial in the variable x. 2x

The expression 5x

a cubic polynomial.
